April 2012 Publisher Letter

This month’s focus, Green Living, is a topic and a way of life about which I am passionate. I am enthralled by the endless daily opportunities we have to incorporate Earth-friendly practices in every aspect of our lives. In our April feature, “Green Home Checklist,” author Crissy Trask gives us all kinds of green options; I particularly love what she has to say about natural bedding and using sun power on laundry day. Embracing the tips in just this single article will make our lives healthier, while contributing to the health of the Earth.

My passion for green living dates back to my freshman year at the University of Texas at Austin. At the risk of severely dating myself, those were the days of skinny-dipping at Hippy Hollow, shopping at the new, nascent Whole Earth Provisions store on The Drag and protesting at Board of Regents meetings. Groups of students were going off and living in communes or living right in the city and opting to grow all of their own food and only use natural ingredients.

This is the environment I came of age in, and it stuck with me as a passion. Now I’ve finally come full circle to where I have the knowledge and confidence – and most of all, the opportunity – to more aggressively pursue my passion; to research and grow and then it with all our readers. I consider the opportunity to publish this magazine – and to educate, inform and encourage our readers as a God-given privilege –a ministry, if you will.

This month is particularly fun and rewarding for a green evangelist like me. In addition to our feature article, we also bring you an insightful interview with Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, president of our own Parker College, fresh off an interview with Dr. Phil, in which he extols the virtues of being green inside and outside the body.

Every April, Earth Day brings celebrations of our home planet around the world, reminding us how vital it is that we honor Mother Earth all year long. I’d like to pass along a truth that, “Earth isn’t one big trash can.” Join us as we recognize some of the many Earth Day celebrations in the Metroplex –we’ve come a long way, baby – with quality, interactive events that allow residents to sample the many green, eco and environmental offerings of both large and small companies, institutions, and nonprofit organizations that serve us here. We give special nod to Trammel Crow as our Metroplex environmental hero as he spearheads the second Earth Day Dallas event – this year moved to a bigger and more environmentally friendly venue, Fair Park. See our special Earth Day Dallas pullout map and list of events and locations.

As we all make small consistent changes toward cleaning up our planet and our insides, I think we will be pleasantly amazed at how much healthier we might feel. Let’s vow to further green up our lives today by caring for our bodies and our planet with the tools that God has so generously provided, in the manner prescribed in His word. He has provided what we need – let’s take our next steps now, and remember that green living is healthy and healthy living is green.

Blessings,
