Dr. Carlos Chapa, OMD, LAc, Phd., is a doctor of Oriental medicine, board certified herbalist and licensed acupuncturist, and owner of Acupuncture & Integrative Medical Center.

How does acupuncture fit into a person’s wellness plan?

Acupuncture used in conjunction with herbal therapy is its own compete medical system. Chinese medicine is new to our culture, but it is the oldest medicine in the world. It can virtually treat anything from a common cold to diabetes to high blood pressure. We specialize in chronic pain and chronic problems in our clinic. However, for acute conditions, such as broken bones and trauma, etc., we refer people to the emergency clinics.

Is acupuncture used to treat common ailments?

Yes. We treat stress, anxiety, headaches, allergies, menstrual issues, digestive disorders, back pain and many other common ailments.

Is acupuncture used to treat disease?

Yes. We treat diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even patients with Bell’s palsy. We also work with cancer patients as a complementary therapy to help them get through treatment, which can cause debilitating side effects such as nausea, digestive issues and fatigue. In addition, we help build up their immune systems.

Is acupuncture used on a routine basis for maintaining health?

Yes. In Asia, there’s much more emphasis on prevention. It's common for a patient to get treatment the day same day as an injury or symptom.

What are some uses for acupuncture that people might not know about?

A lot of people don’t know that Chinese medicine can be used for cosmetic treatment! There’s a reason that many Asian women have one of the best complexions and skin in the world. We can help with wrinkles and skin problems such as acne, rosacea and eczema. We can also help with menopause symptoms like hot flashes and infertility.

When is herbal therapy recommended?

Acupuncture and herbal therapy is a beautiful complementary system, and we usually prescribe a combination of both. However, either therapy can also be used exclusively.

Is Chinese medicine used to treat mental health issues?

Yes. We treat depression, anxiety, insomnia and addictions.

Can herbal medicine help with weight loss?

Yes. We can help by increasing metabolism with herbal therapy and using acupuncture on problem spots. We use specific points on the ear to decrease appetite.

What makes your clinic stand out among other clinics?

I am a doctor of oriental medicine and licensed acupuncturist, which requires completing eight years of postgraduate college education, passing a national board examination and meeting stringent licensing requirements. I was also lucky enough to study and complete several externships in China and South Korea. Prior to my training in Oriental medicine, I served active duty in the military as a medic and worked as a paramedic and an emergency room nurse for more than seven years.
