This Portable Farm Keeps on Truckin’

When mother and daughter Marilyn and Donelle Simmons, of Garden Inspirations, decided to incorporate the DFW Truck Farm, which educates local schools and communities about gardening in small spaces and fresh, local, real food, all in the back of an old pick-up truck, as part of their garden education program, one good garden deed led to another. The duo has decided to add one more aspect to their DFW Truck Farm educational platform: The North Texas Food Revolution.

The main goal of the North Texas Food Revolution group is to bring awareness of fresh and local food, working with local schools and local farmers connecting them together, and leaders plan to work with FoodDay Dallas to create events to help revolutionize North Texas food. The upcoming DFW Truck Farm 5k Fun Run at Earth Day Dallas, April 22, will be their fundraiser for the 2012-2013 school year.

A truck farm is a vegetable garden planted in the bed of a pickup truck. The DFW Truck educates, empowers and encourages its audience about gardening topics. The opportunity of bringing a garden on wheels into the community through events or schools is a powerful message of fresh, local and real food.

Truck Farm is a national urban agriculture project helmed by Ian Cheney, the award-winning co-creator of the 2007 film, King Corn. Truck Farm was born in Brooklyn, NY in 2009, when Ian planted a vegetable garden in the bed of his grandfather’s pick-up truck. The documentary, Truck Farm, premiered at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in January. In coordination with the release of the film, the fleet was scaled to 25 Truck Farms in a select 25 American cities.

Garden Inspirations plans to have designated story times during the open hours of the Green Exhibit and hands-on projects for children and parents to enjoy that involve learning about growing food in small spaces.
