For more than 37 years, Abrams Royal Compounding Pharmacy has offered personalized medications and targeted treatment plans in a convenient and friendly environment. The family-owned pharmacy, with locations in Dallas and Plano, works with patients and physicians to develop and implement customized wellness programs. Besides compounding, Abrams offers nutritional education, and professional grade supplements to promote long term overall health.

Dr. Codi Triesch, Pharm D., who currently serves as the Director of Pharmacy at Abrams, has been part of the business for most of her life. Her father, Bob Scarbrough, started the pharmacy in 1980 and over the years the whole family has been involved in some way. Seeing her father’s passion for his work prompted Codi to pursue a career in healthcare herself. She holds a doctorate in pharmacy, a degree in Biochemistry, and has years of hands on practice with herbal remedies and alternative wellness. This holistic focus is a natural part of compounding, which is extremely person centered.

“Pharmaceutical compounding is tailoring a medication to a patient’s specific needs. It allows the pharmacist to generate the exact dosage, strength, and ingredients that are right for the patient,” says Dr. Triesch. Compounding is typically used to change the form of a medication, to obtain a specific dose, or to avoid a non-essential ingredient. Some medications, for example, contain gluten or other fillers that patients may be allergic to. Compounding can also be used to add flavors or otherwise changing the taste or texture.

Although compounding is their primary focus, Abrams offers a number of other services to maximize a patient’s overall health and wellness. They offer  complimentary community education seminars on a variety of topics, such as adrenal fatigue, thyroid, fibromyalgia, chronic inflammation, sports nutrition, and food allergies. “Nutrition plays an indispensable role in promoting optimal cell function,” says Dr. Triesch. The pharmacy offers a micronutrient test to evaluate the function of over thirty vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential micronutrients in a patient’s white blood cells.

“Gut health is tied to so many other issues, so we often start there in consultations. We look at adrenals and thyroid, which can often be affected if a person is especially stressed,” says Dr. Triesch. Abrams carries over 100 different professional grade supplements and nutraceutical lines, many of which are only available through a licensed healthcare professional. The pharmacy also uses applied kinesiology for muscle testing to further identify which treatment a patient responds best to.

“Our family believes in proactive solutions to restore health and wellness. So much of conventional medicine is focused on just treating the symptom, not the cause. Instead of prescribing a pill for depression, we might run tests and discover that the patient actually has a magnesium deficiency that is causing apathy and fatigue. Then we’re able to provide nutritional counseling and education,” says Dr. Triesch.

Abrams values their community, and goes out of their way to accommodate special needs. The pharmacy has made compounds for cats, penguins, and even a hedgehog with an ulcer. “We have a really close relationship with our patients. Because we’ve been in business so long, we’ve seen them grow over generations. It’s very fulfilling when they come back and tell us that what we recommended really helped them. Our patients know that they can get a specially trained pharmacist on the phone to discuss their healthcare.  At Abrams we want to help our patients get healthy, and stay healthy, naturally,” says Dr. Triesch.
