Deliciousness Month

July marks the exact middle of summer, when produce is at its prime and one bite into a peach or plum or a single cherry or raspberry oozes deliciousness. Those of us who are concerned about nutrition and calories, as well as flavor, revel in this time of year, because it is when we can have it all. I love sweets, and in July I get my fill of them while avoiding the processed sugars, additives, preservatives and empty calories in my other sweets of choice: baked goods and ice cream. Summer produce isn't just good to us and good for us; it's lifesaving. Rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, fresh fruits and veggies support our immune system, hydrate our bodies and nourish our skin. Let's savor nature's gifts while reaping the wholesome benefits they offer and reveling in the finely tuned environment our creator made just for us so we can survive and  thrive.

To help you make the best of the summer bounty, we've included our ninth annual Farmers Market & Healthy Food Pullout Guide, in the center of the Magazine, starting on page 17 through page 36. You'll find a county-by-county listing of North Texas farmers markets; CSAs (community-supported agriculture programs); farms that you can visit and buy from directly; nurseries and garden centers; farm-to-table restaurants; vegetarian and vegan restaurants; and businesses offering natural, organic and healthy prepared meals. Please keep this informative guide for reference all year long.

We also invite you to delve deeper into the interconnected worlds of soil health and gut health in our article “The Microbiome Connection,” on page 34. For more insight on food production, agriculture and land use, check out HealthyLivingHealthyPlanetRadio.com, where you can listen to current and past shows on our July food themes.

If farm-fresh fruits and veggies are your kitchen inspiration, don't miss our recipes celebrating the flavors of the season, which are online only. And check out our online only, extras to read tips and insights for prioritizing your well-being and staying in harmony with nature during the hottest days. While most of us relish the joys of summer, it's important to protect our bodies from the sweltering heat. As I write this, the weatherman has informed us that we are under a heat alert, with temperatures that can feel like 115 degrees. I suspect most people will be staying indoors for several days until the extreme temps are expected to subside. Meanwhile, why not embrace opportunities to engage in green, healthy activities within the comfort of home?

One way to beat the heat and enhance your well-being is by creating a soothing indoor oasis. Set up a meditation corner or a cozy reading nook where you can unwind, reflect and find solace in the pages of a good book. Surround yourself with plants to purify the air and infuse your space with natural ambiance. Embrace the tranquility of indoor activities that nourish your mind, body and soul.

This is also a good time to explore new wellness practices that can be incorporated into your routine on scorching summer days. Take advantage of the early mornings or late evenings when the temperature is more tolerable to engage in outdoor exercises like yoga, tai chi or brisk walks. (My summer outdoor activity of choice is early-morning gardening.) Stay hydrated by sipping on refreshing herbal infusions or icy, fruit-infused water. And don't forget to protect your skin with natural, chemical-free sunscreens and stay cool with lightweight, breathable clothing.

Let's make the most of this vibrant season with an unwavering commitment to our health and the health of the planet. Wishing you a summer filled with joy, wellness and deliciousness.

Blessings,
