She has hugged more than 30 million people worldwide and is renowned for her extraordinary acts of love and self-sacrifice, giving rise to an extensive network of spiritual and charitable activities.

Amma’s efforts include donating millions of dollars to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, and the Asian tsunami of 2005. The organization is continuing to support the Haiti relief efforts by opening an orphanage. Other projects include state-of-the-art hospitals in India, which are free to the poor; universities, schools, free homes for the poor and needy; medical camps; orphanages; and schools. Amma has been recognized by numerous international organizations for her unselfish humanitarian work.

Amma says, “When you offer a flower to another person, a beautiful fragrant flower, you experience the sweet beauty and fragrance first. And then you share it with the other person. So, it gives you happiness for no particular reason, because you are selflessly serving others. You will be able to forget your self. That is real service, when you are able to forget your self and offer your self completely to the other person.”
