DFW Ranks Tenth in Green Job Creation

The Dallas/Fort Worth area earned high marks in a study on green job creation, ranking 10th among the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas, according to a Brookings Institution report. Data was analyzed across 39 distinct segments, from “clean” product manufacturing to wind turbines, solar panels and mass transit de- velopers and the list ranked metropolitan areas according to the percent of total jobs that are considered green.

The study looked used Census data to determine the Dallas metropolitan area had 38,562 clean jobs overall, or 1.3 percent of all jobs in the area. The area added 7,904 green jobs between 2003 and 2010, resulting in a 3.3 percent annual growth in the sector. The median wage for green jobs in the Dallas area is $40,104, equal to the median wage for all jobs in the area. The largest number of green jobs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area were 5,574 in waste management and treatment and 5,543 in public mass transit.

The Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington area in the study encompasses Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, Parker, Wise, Collin, Delta, Kaufman, Hunt, Delta, Rockwall and Johnson counties.

Other Texas metropolitan areas also made the list. Of other Texas cities, Houston ranked ninth, Austin was 36th and San Antonio/New Braunfels was 48th.
