Texas Unites over Organic Markets

Vincent Hirth, founder of the Four Seasons Farmers Markets, has developed the Texas Organic Network (TON) to respond to the overwhelming demand and need for local, quality organic produce, as well to strengthen and unify the organic farming community in Texas. Hirth wants to offer organic produce from local farms at his markets, but there’s been a problem with organization of getting the produce delivered. So, he decided to create a distribution system by getting it himself.
TON will bring locally grown, orbecause he doesn’t have enough trucks. Farmers should farm. I can take care of the logistics and sales part.” Hirth says he wants not only to sell organic produce, but also to educate the public on why it’s worth buying. Susie Marshall, of The Gleaning Network of Texas, will direct the program.
TON has begun fundraising efforts to purchase refrigerated trailers to transport the produce. The goal is to raise $20,000 in a series of events that will also introduce attendees to local growers and promote the value of local, organic produce for the North Texas area.
