The main component is linseed oil, produced by pressing flax seeds. Pine resins are mixed with the oil to produce a flexible binder. Wood flour is obtained from controlled forestry sources and tropical hardwoods are not used. Natural pigments provide color and renewable jute fiber makes up the backing. Helping to further reduce the environmental impact, Marmoleum harsh cleaners with high pH, like ammonia, should be avoided.

It is made without using volatile organic compounds (VOC), specifically formaldehyde, which is a widespread component of pressed wood products such as particleboard, hardwood plywood and medium density fiberboard, making Marmoleum beneficial for people with allergies, respiratory disorders and multiple chemical sensitivities. The innate antimicrobial properties of flax seeds inhibit the growth of microorganisms and allergen-producing dust mites. Marmoleum’s anti-static properties also repel dust and dirt.
