FedEx Installs Rooftop Solar System

FedEx has installed the largest rooftop solar system in North Texas at its ground hub in Hutchins, joining similar systems in Rialto, California, Woodbridge, New Jersey, and Queens, New York. Expanding renewable energy is a primary sustainability initiative at FedEx Ground, and the Dallas site was selected because it is a long-term owned facility within the Oncor utility service area that met their criteria for incentives, roof size, favorable solar production and electric load need.

The 1.4 megawatt system uses 4,522 solar modules that are expected to offset approximately 20 percent of the facility’s electricity consumption, which is equivalent to the electricity used by 177 homes in one year. The hub employs 1,100 workers and is 630,000 square feet, with plans to expand to more than 730,000 square feet by 2005.
