Eighty years ago, Mary and Lloyd Anderson and 21 of their mountaineering friends pooled their resources, combined their skills and worked together to start REI Co-op. Today, the co-op helps millions of people experience the transformational power of the outdoors each year. REI has released their annual Stewardship Report, which highlights the many ways REI contributes to the future health of the outdoors.

Going forward, new product sustainability standards, developed in partnership with key vendors, will apply to all brands stocked at REI. A co-op publication from last fall, The Path Ahead, articulates why social and environmental impact is fundamental to the co-op's purpose.
