Female Chickadees Seek Superior Memory in Mates

A recent study in eLife sheds light on the survival strategies employed by mountain chickadees during the harsh winter months of the Sierra Nevada. These diminutive birds rely heavily on their spatial memory to locate thousands of meticulously hidden seeds, enabling them to endure periods of food scarcity. The researchers found that this cognitive ability not only helps the birds live longer but also influences their mating preferences.
Using smart feeders, scientists observed that female chickadees frequently seek out additional mates with superior spatial memory. Genetic analysis shows that roughly 70 percent of nests contained at least one chick fathered by an outside male. Females demonstrating weaker memory skills were more likely to seek out more intelligent partners. By doing so, they compensated for their own cognitive shortcomings, ensuring that their offspring inherit the robust spatial memory needed to thrive in a challenging environment. Males with the most advanced memories fathered the highest number of outside chicks, and their attentive care for their own nest remained unaffected.
