Prediabetes? Take Charge.
Knowing that healthier eating and regular exercise can help prevent type 2 diabetes is one thing. Putting those recommendations into practice and sustaining them is another. The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program offers North Texans a free, structured approach to making lasting lifestyle changes, with guidance and support along the way.
Designed for adults at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the yearlong, in-person program focuses on practical, achievable improvements rather than quick fixes. Participants meet in small groups led by trained lifestyle coaches who help them develop healthier eating habits, increase physical activity and overcome everyday obstacles.
The program includes 25 sessions, beginning with weekly meetings and gradually transitioning to less frequent gatherings. Topics include meal planning, reading food labels, managing stress, staying motivated and navigating challenges such as holidays, restaurant meals and changes in routine.
Participants work toward two measurable goals: reducing body weight by approximately 7 percent and achieving at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Food and activity journals help participants recognize patterns, track progress and identify opportunities for improvement. The group setting also provides encouragement and accountability.
The program is intended for adults ages 18 and older who meet eligibility requirements based on weight and diabetes risk, including individuals with prediabetes or a history of gestational diabetes. Those already diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are not eligible.
While existing YMCA program locations currently have waitlists, new in-person classes are planned to launch in December at the Moorland Family YMCA in Oak Cliff and in Waxahachie. Participation is free.
For North Texans concerned about their diabetes risk, the YMCA program offers an opportunity to move beyond awareness and take meaningful steps toward better health.
