Beyond the Remedy: The Art of Listening in Homeopathic Care

“I am not looking for a permanent customer. I want you WELL!”

It's a statement Cathy May Lemmon, PhD Hom, MARH, often shares with clients, and one that captures the philosophy behind her more than 20 years as a homeopathic practitioner, educator and author.

For Lemmon, understanding a person's health begins with something easily overlooked in today's fast-paced world: taking the time to listen. She believes exploring an individual's concerns, experiences and circumstances is just as important to her homeopathic practice as selecting a remedy.

Her approach reflects a central principle of traditional homeopathy: No two people experience health challenges in precisely the same way, and each deserves to be considered as an individual.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Traditional homeopathy considers an individual's physical symptoms, emotional experiences and personal circumstances when selecting remedies. For Lemmon, understanding those distinctions is central to her approach.

When a mother contacted her about three children experiencing recurring strep throat, she initially wanted a single homeopathic protocol for all three. Lemmon instead asked detailed questions about each child's symptoms and circumstances.

The encounter illustrated a principle central to her practice: People with similar health concerns may describe very different experiences.

“There is no ‘cookie cutter’ approach in this medicine,” Lemmon explains.

Rather than starting with a predetermined remedy, she emphasizes gathering information and considering each person's individual circumstances.

Preparation Is Part of the Process

Before meeting with clients, Lemmon requests detailed intake paperwork outlining their concerns and health histories. She reviews these materials and consults homeopathic repertories, reference books describing remedies and their traditionally associated symptom patterns.

These extensive resources can contain thousands of pages. Lemmon considers research and preparation important components of her consultations.

Additional information gathered during an appointment may change her initial impressions, making conversation and careful listening especially important.

She deliberately limits the number of clients she accepts, explaining that individualized consultations require substantial preparation and attention.

“I do not want to cut anyone short because I have a number of other clients to serve as well,” she says.

From Personal Discovery to Global Education

Lemmon's interest in homeopathy began when she was a young mother exploring natural approaches to family wellness. That experience eventually developed into a professional career encompassing consultations, education, writing and international advocacy.

As founder and president of Homeoprophylaxis: A Worldwide Choice for Disease Prevention (HPWWC), Lemmon has helped bring together practitioners, educators and others through international conferences in the United States, Europe and India.

An international lecturer, Lemmon is also the author of The Prophylactic Use of Homeopathic Medicine, which examines traditional homeopathic concepts of disease prevention.

Research into individualized homeopathy has yielded some statistically significant findings compared with placebo, although study limitations prevent firm conclusions about effectiveness. While researchers continue investigating its potential benefits, major health authorities maintain that reliable evidence supporting homeopathy for specific conditions remains insufficient. Homeopathic approaches should not replace or delay established medical care.

A Personal Philosophy of Wellness

For Lemmon, her work encompasses more than selecting traditional remedies. She values personal relationships, careful observation and opportunities to understand each person's concerns.
