Dallas Yoga Center Retreat in Tulum

Apr 29, 2018 10:43PM ● By Landry Rose

There’s a growing trend in wellness travel for the tourism industry, giving yogis more options and reasons to take a week off to find space and time for themselves to relax, reflect, rest and restore. David Sunshine, owner of the Dallas Yoga Center, shares that Tulum, Mexico, on the Caribbean coast, has the perfect combination of wonder for an extraordinary trip: its beautiful culture, the awe-inspiring natural beauties of the ocean and beaches, cenotes, jungles, wildlife, Mayan ruins and healthy, fresh, organic foods.

Yoga and wellness retreats have become more popular in Mexico, especially in Tulum, where state officials held the Tulum Vegan Fest in January. The Mexican Secretary of State of Tourism, Marisol Vanegas Perez, wants to attract more wellness travelers with the aim of finding physical, mental and emotional well-being to create investment and infrastructure in the area.

Tulum has long been a hidden gem and popular vacation destination where celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Cara Delevingne, Sienna Miller and other A-listers go to soak up some sun, sand, surf and yoga. Denmark’s renowned restaurant Noma selected Tulum as a location for a  pop-up. Head chef Rene Redzepi is known for his love of foraging.

After visiting Tulum, Sunshine knew he wanted to bring a group there to experience its magic and wonder., so the Dallas Yoga Center created the seven-night Om in Tulum: Yoga and Meditation Retreat with Dean Hollingsworth, for 18 students from May 26 through June 2, at the Shambala Petit Hotel, a private beachfront resort. Hollingsworth, a Dallas Yoga Center teacher, will be leading the daily yoga and meditation and holding space for the students. He selected the dates so they would have the full moon experience on May 31.

Hollingsworth teaches yoga at the Dallas Yoga Center and at free classes at Yoga in the Park, in Klyde Warren Park, at 10 a.m. Saturdays. In-between yoga and meditation, Sunshine says he hopes the students take the time to not only rest and replenish alongside the turquoise waters and sandy shores of the Carribbean Ocean, enjoy a massage by the beach, experience a temezkal (sweat lodge) or visit the ruins and cenotes, but to embrace the warmth of the community by exploring the local shops, markets and restaurants.

Cost starts at $1,995 and includes lodging, healthy meals, one group transportation, daily yoga and meditation. For reservations and more information, visit
