2022 Great Backyard Bird Count

Each year, the world comes together for four days from February 18 through 21 to watch and count as many birds as they can find and report them to the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before their annual migration. Watching birds is a safe and enjoyable activity we can all do during the COVID global pandemic. Participants are urged to comply with all health regulations and guidelines.

Watch birds for 15 minutes or more at least once over the four days and count all the birds seen or heard, then use the best tool for sharing bird sightings, such as the Merlin Bird ID app, the eBird mobile app or the eBird website. There are special instructions for group counting.

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, GBBC was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds. Birds Canada joined the project in 2009, and in 2013, it became a global project by entering data into eBird, the world’s largest biodiversity-related citizen science project.
