Holiday Grease Roundup Helps North Texans Protect Pipes and Waterways

Residents across North Texas are encouraged to recycle used cooking oils and grease during the 2025 Holiday Grease Roundup, which runs until January 31. Organized by Defend Your Drains North Texas, the annual campaign invites households of all types, including renters, apartment and condo residents—to collect cooled fats, oils and grease (FOG) from holiday cooking rather than pouring them down the drain. Collected materials can be dropped off at more than 50 community collection sites across the region.
Why it matters: When fats, oils and grease are poured into sinks or toilets, they can harden inside pipes, clog municipal sewer lines and damage local water infrastructure. These blockages often lead to costly repairs, sewer overflows and environmental pollution that strain municipal budgets and disrupt essential services. Recycling FOG helps keep it out of local waterways and allows it to be converted into biodiesel or biogas—cleaner, renewable fuels that reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions and support more sustainable energy systems.
Last year’s Holiday Grease Roundup collected 9,080 gallons of used cooking oil and grease from participating communities, reflecting a strong regional commitment to protecting water resources, infrastructure reliability and environmental health.
