Using Telemedicine to Break the Ice

According to a Cleveland Clinic survey, it is common for men to avoid seeking healthcare. In fact, 65 percent of men surveyed reported that they wait as long as possible before seeking care for their symptoms. Seventy-two precent of men surveyed reported they would rather do household chores than see a doctor. While the reasons for not participating in routine health care were not fully explored in this survey, results did suggest that this may be due to being told as child that, “Men do not complain about health issues.”

Sadly, 20 percent of men reported not being honest with their doctor because they felt judged, were embarrassed or were simply uncomfortable with discussing their issue. Of additional interest is that most men reported engaging in actions to maintain their health so that they would live longer for family and friends.

If these statements apply, it may be time for a change. Preventative healthcare and check-ups are essential for every man’s health. Delaying medical care can lead to dire consequences and is contrary to what most men want.

Prior to choosing a healthcare provider such as a nurse practitioner or physician, spend some time doing some research. Review their website, talk with their office staff and read online reviews at Zocdoc.com or WebMD. This will give an idea of who they are and their approach to patient care. Look for a healthcare provider that offers appointments outside of nontraditional business hours that may be less disruptive to a work schedule.

Telemedicine visits have become more common since the pandemic, offering more convenience and privacy. While there are limits to what can be done that way, it is a great beginning to a relationship with a healthcare provider.
