Strength Training Emerging as Essential for Healthy Aging

May 29, 2026 08:33AM ● By Bernice Butler
Strength training is increasingly being recognized by health experts as one of the most important tools for maintaining long-term wellness, mobility and independence as people age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults who participate in muscle-strengthening activities at least twice weekly may improve bone density, balance, metabolism and joint stability while reducing risks associated with falls, chronic disease and physical decline.

Yet CDC data shows only about 1 in 4 adults meet recommended guidelines for both aerobic
and strength-building activity. Across DFW growing interest in functional fitness, mobility
training and recovery-focused exercise is driving expansion among fitness studios, YMCAs
and wellness centers. Health professionals say the trend is especially relevant in North Texas,
where active lifestyles, recreational sports like pickleball and corporate wellness culture continue
shaping demand for preventive fitness and recovery programs.
