Why Walking May Be the Most Underrated Exercise for Long-Term Health

Walking Continues to Rank Among the Most Effective Forms of Exercise

Health experts continue emphasizing that walking remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve overall wellness and cardiovascular health. Dallas-based American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity weekly, yet fewer than half of U.S. adults meet recommended activity levels.

Research supported by the American Heart Association shows regular walking may help reduce risks associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, stress and anxiety while also supporting sleep, mood and mobility. Even brisk walking for as little as 30 minutes a day may significantly improve long-term cardiovascular health.

Across the DFW Metroplex, cities and park systems continue expanding trails, walking paths and outdoor recreation initiatives encouraging residents to incorporate more movement into daily life. Popular systems such as the Katy Trail in Dallas, Fort Worth’s Trinity Trails and expanding greenbelt connections throughout Collin, Denton and Tarrant counties have helped fuel growing participation in walking groups, charity wellness walks and outdoor fitness programs.

Health professionals say walking remains one of the safest, most accessible and lowest-cost ways for people of nearly all ages and fitness levels to begin improving their health.
