As North Texas faces rising temperatures, increased strain on the electric grid and growing interest in clean energy, the City of Dallas is helping residents explore more affordable renewable energy options through its new “Switch Together” program.

Developed in partnership with nonprofit Solar United Neighbors, the citywide initiative helps simplify the process of purchasing rooftop solar, battery storage and electric vehicle charging systems. The program supports goals outlined in Dallas’ Comprehensive Environmental & Climate Action Plan (CECAP), including increased renewable energy use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

A key feature of the program is its group purchasing and installer auction model. Instead of homeowners individually researching contractors and negotiating pricing, vetted installers compete in a reverse auction process to offer discounted group rates. Because installers benefit from lower marketing costs and a concentrated pipeline of projects, many of those savings can be passed along to participating homeowners. According to the program, households in the previous round saved an average of approximately $6,565 on a typical solar installation.

The process is intended to be straightforward and transparent. Residents register online at Switch Together Dallas and later receive a personalized proposal outlining estimated costs, projected savings and installer details specific to their property. Homeowners then decide whether to move forward, with no obligation required.

Beyond financial savings, solar energy and battery storage may also improve household resilience during severe weather and power outages by providing backup power for essential appliances and devices. City officials note these benefits are becoming increasingly important as Dallas experiences hotter summers and growing energy demands. Solar adoption may also help reduce air pollution while giving homeowners more control over long-term energy use.

Solar United Neighbors also provides educational webinars, office hours and consumer resources to help residents better understand solar technology, battery storage and installation timelines. Dallas officials say the initiative aims to make residential clean energy more accessible and easier to understand for homeowners across the city.
