Nature's Bounty All Around Us

Jun 30, 2026 08:32AM ● By Bernice Butler

July may be the month when North Texans begin to complain about the heat and seek refuge from it, but it is also one of the clearest reminders of God's provision.

This time of year, nature is working overtime. Farmers are harvesting crops. Gardens are producing vegetables and herbs. Farmers markets overflow with colorful fruits and vegetables. Lakes, rivers and oceans are teeming with life. Birds fill the skies, pollinators move from flower to flower and countless living systems work together in ways both visible and unseen.

In short, nature's bounty is all around us.

It's easy to overlook these gifts because they surround us every day. Yet when we stop and pay attention, we are reminded that the natural world is not random. It was designed with purpose.

Our Instruction Manual, the Bible, tells us in Genesis 1:29, "Then God said, 'I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.'" From the beginning, God created the earth to sustain and provide for life.

Later, in Psalm 24:1, we are reminded, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." Everything we enjoy, from the food on our tables to the air we breathe and the water we drink, comes from His creation.

God also gave humanity a unique responsibility. In Genesis, He instructed mankind to care for and steward the earth. Rather, we were designed to live in relationship with creation, benefiting from its abundance while caring for it responsibly.

That relationship is perhaps most evident in the food we eat.

This month, we are proud to present our 12th Annual Farmers Market & Healthy Food Guide, one of the most anticipated resources we publish each year. What began as a simple county-by-county listing of farmers markets has become one of North Texas' most widely used healthy living resources.

For twelve consecutive years, it has been our privilege to connect readers with the people who grow, raise and produce much of the nourishment that sustains our communities. We are especially proud that in a metropolitan area of more than eight million people, North Texans still enjoy access to an extraordinary network of local farms, ranches and food producers. That is something worth celebrating.

But nature's bounty extends far beyond what comes from the soil.

This month, our Good Vibes Great Outdoors coverage reminds us that some of nature's greatest gifts come from the air, the water and the natural spaces that surround us. Time outdoors has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress and support overall wellness.

Whether it's fishing, kayaking, hiking, birdwatching, gardening or simply enjoying a sunset, nature offers restoration in ways modern life often cannot.

Perhaps that's because we were created for it.

The Bible begins not in a city, but in a garden. Humanity's first home was immersed in creation. Even today, many of us feel more grounded, more peaceful and more connected when we spend time outdoors. Nature has a remarkable ability to remind us of both our dependence on God and our connection to one another.

As we celebrate nature's bounty this month, may we also celebrate the Creator who made it possible, the farmers and producers who help bring it to our tables and the outdoor spaces that restore and sustain us. Together, they remind us that some of life's greatest gifts are also its simplest.

As always, we hope you will find much in this issue to help you along your journey to living a healthy life on a healthy planet.

Blessings until next month,

Bernice Butler
